Some colours were made to sit side by side. In Amalfi Blue, a deep blue bowl overflows with lemons, whole and halved, some still holding their leaves, while two more rest on the table in front. The background falls into a rich midnight blue, so the fruit seems to give off its own light.
Monique builds the lemons with thick, sculpted strokes of golden yellow, letting the blues of the bowl and the shadows pull through. It is a still life with energy: bold, sunny and a little wild, the kind of painting that brightens a kitchen, a dining room or an entryway.
